Fortune favours the bold, according to our Big Bow Bake-off judges, with Chris Hill’s Ploughman’s Pie winning him the title of Star Baker 2019.
We had an incredible selection of entries in our bake-off at the Grove Hall Park Great Get-together on Sunday: not as many as previous years, but according to our judges Christoph and Rachael, the standard was very high. Chris’ savoury pie was a “fab combo” with a lovely tang from little pickled onions and was gobbled up by the crowd in no time at all. Joint runners-up were Sofia, Oliva, Becky and Sally’s incredibly ornate Beehive cake – which was praised for its “impressive look” and “lemony icing” – and Tania’s Bananarama cake which won points for subtle spicing and “very satisfying cream.”
Highly commended rosettes went to Jinny for her “perfectly balanced” buttermilk scones with blackberry curd and Maggie’s Spring cake which had “good crumb, perfect icing and pleasing fruit.”
Thanks to all those who entered and to everyone who took part in this year’s event. Maggie raised about £30 for children in Syria with her tasty citrus refresher drink and we raised more than £100 for FCARA, which will be used to fund future events. Thanks for your generous contributions.
Here’s to another successful (and rain-free) picnic in 2020!
